Frisco voters decisively favored a ballot measure that could lead to restaurants and bars being allowed to serve alcohol until 2 a.m.
The proposition passed 58.92 percent to 41.08 percent in Collin County and 60.55 percent to 39.45 percent in Denton County.
A total of 26,108 residents went to the polls, more than tripling the approximately 7,000 residents who voted on the same issue in 2006.
"All the credit goes to the Frisco voters," said Chris Moss, spokesperson for Frisco 2 a.m. PAC, which formed in support of late-night alcohol sales. "They obviously recognize the economic impact and that this will put [Frisco restaurants and bars] on a level playing field with surrounding cities."
Now that the proposition has passed, the Frisco City Council to is allowed to reconsider instituting late-night alcohol sales at a future City Council meeting.
Moss said he is hopeful the issue will be on the next Frisco City Council agenda and "hopefully we will be celebrating later hours very soon."
He said he thinks the Council will pass the ordinance without much discussion because of the voter turnout and support.
If the council passes the ordinance, businesses will have to apply for a permit to be able to serve alcohol until 2 a.m.
Currently restaurants and bars can serve alcohol until midnight every night except Saturday, when they can serve until 1 a.m.
Frisco residents in favor of the late-night ordinance say it allows Frisco businesses to stay competitive with establishments in surrounding cities that allow 2 a.m. hours, increases the city's tax base and helps keep developments such as the Dallas Cowboys and Wade Park to stay competitive in drawing restaurants and bars.
Those against late-night hours say there is not enough evidence to prove a significant economic impact from late-night hours. They also say Frisco does not have enough public transportation options to give people an alternative to drinking and driving and that it would change Frisco's family-friendly culture.
In May 2008 voters, through a petition and subsequent election, repealed a council ordinance that allowed late-night alcohol sales. In the 2008 election, Frisco residents voted 56.77 percent 43.23 percent against late-night alcohol sales.
Results are unofficial until canvassed.
