Traffic woes will continue on 5th Street while construction continues through possibly as late as June from Main Street to Hickory Street, according to city staff members.
The road reconstruction project, which includes replacing some underground utilities, is allowing only southbound travel in a single lane, which will continue through at least the middle of March.
During the current phase of construction, northbound traffic on 5th Street will have to turn right onto Hickory Street and use South County Road as an alternate route to Main Street.
In late March, a traffic switch will take place to allow crews to begin reconstructing the west side of the road. At that point, only northbound traffic will be routed through the area in a single lane.
Construction is expected to be finished in late May or early June.
When complete, the reconstructed road will be a two-lane, concrete road with parking spaces on each side, separated by landscape islands with new decorative lighting.
A sidewalk connection project is going on simultaneously with the road reconstruction, but extends farther south. The sidewalk will be continuous from Main Street to Stonebrook Parkway.
The entire $1.7 million project is being funded by the city of Frisco.
