The number of students for whom English is a second language has increased by 62 percent in the Carroll school district, prompting a request for two more teachers next year.

ESL teachers told the school board Jan. 14 that the number of students in the program went from 64 in 2011-12 to 104 in 2012-13. The number in 2010-11 was 40.

The students come from a range of backgrounds. The district provided this breakdown for languages this year: Spanish, 53; German 9, Chinese, 8; Russian, 6; Vietnamese, 4; two each speak Dutch, Gujurati, Finnish, Hindi, Portuguese, Telegu and Turkish; and one each speaks Bosnian, Korean, Indonesian, Punjabi and Tagalog.

The largest number of English as a Second Language students is in the first grade, where there are 20.

District spokeswoman Julie Thannum said Carroll has been handling the increase with two long-term substitutes, but wants to add two permanent positions to the 2013-14 budget, bringing the total number of teachers to six.
