Incumbent Democrat Wendy Davis defeated Republican opponent Mark M. Shelton, unofficial election results showed Tuesday.

With all Tarrant County precincts reporting, she had about 51 percent of the vote to Shelton's 49 percent. Davis had a trying campaign during which the Republican-led state Legislature tried unsuccesfully to redraw the district's boundaries.

In District 9, Republican Kelly Hancock had 61 percent of the vote; Democrat Pete Martinez, 35 percent; and Libertarian Dave (Mac) McElwee, about 4 percent. The winner fills a seat vacated when Sen. Chris Harris, R-Arlington, retired after 21 years in office.

Incumbent Republican Jane Nelson won about 84 percent of the Tarrant County vote in District 12, to Libertarian John A. Betz, Jr.' 16 percent. Nelson also was winning in Denton County after all 145 precincts had reported.

Terms are four years in the Texas Senate.

Vote totals are unofficial until canvassed.
