After neither incumbent who filed for re-election this spring drew opposition, The Town of Westlake on Monday night approved canceling the general election on May 12.
Mayor Laura Wheat and Councilman Clif Cox will continue to serve until May 2014. Councilman Tim Brittan, whose term also expires in May, decided not to file for re-election.
Brittan, president of Infinity Oil & Gas, has served as a council member since May 2008.
"I'm just gone so much and had just told Mayor Wheat that I just didn't think it was in the town's best interest for me to miss so many meetings and that's just not my style," Brittan said from Wellington, Fla.
Brittan has been in Florida since December to provide support for his three children who were competing in equestrian competition.
"And it doesn't look like it is clearing up with my children's activities," he said. "And I hate the thought of being an absentee council member."
Nobody filed to take Brittan's place. The Town Council has the option of making an appointment to fill the position or leaving the position vacant until May 2013. The council did not make any decisions on Monday night.
Wheat, who volunteers for nonprofits, has served as mayor since May 2008, and Clif Cox, who is a colon and rectal surgeon, has served as a council member since May 2010.
