McKinney Police Chief Greg Conley will transition into a new role on Oct. 1 as the city’s director of public safety, pending City Council approval in the next budget, according to a McKinney news release.

In this new position, Conley will oversee McKinney’s police department, fire department and the office of emergency management, and he will help strengthen the city’s policies regarding public safety, the release stated.

Several specific areas of focus for Conley will be “to develop more robust public safety policies for collaborating with schools and other institutions in addressing the city’s risks and response to gun violence; integrating emergency management functions to better respond to emergencies at the McKinney National Airport; [and] increasing community engagement on public safety issues throughout the city,” according to the release.

“I look forward to the new challenges this position will bring and am pleased I will still be closely involved with our excellent police and fire departments,” Conley said in the release.

Beginning Oct. 1, Assistant Chief Joe Ellenburg will serve as interim police chief while the city searches for a permanent replacement.
