The rate of bystanders using CPR in McKinney has increased by 8% in the last year, according to the McKinney Fire Department.

Last November, 12,128 people participated in learning hands-only CPR during an event, setting a Guinness World Record.

The fire department now knows that people are putting their new skills to use, said a Dec. 19 MFD new release.

This increase means that a bystander provided hands-only CPR in 33% of cardiac emergencies reported by the fire department, according to the release.

“We are so excited to be seeing results like this one year after MFD’s joint effort involving MISD and Medical Director Dr. Liz Fagan,” said Merit Ossian, MFD public Information officer and education coordinator, in the release. “The McKinney Fire Department is working hard to get more people who live and work in McKinney trained through our Ready to React program that teaches hands-only CPR along with Stop the Bleed Training.”
