Visitors to McKinney’s Towne Lake Park can now rent kayaks for use on the park’s waterways, according to a Sept. 14 news release from the city.

Visitors are able to rent the kayaks at the new self-service kiosks using a QR code system through rental app Rent.fun.

There are four kayaks available to rent, the rentals are available daily from sunup to sundown, and each rental includes a paddle and a life jacket, according to the release. The rentals cost $3 to unlock the kiosk and an additional $3 for every 30 minutes they are rented.

“From the comfort of your own kayak, you can paddle around our scenic Towne Lake and simply enjoy the nature surrounding you,” said Ryan Mullins, interim director of the McKinney Parks and Recreation department, in the release.

The kayak rental program comes about a year after city officials updated the park’s dock and added a kayak launch. Beginner kayaking classes will be available in September and October at Towne Lake Park, and will include instruction on kayaking basics, safety and boat launching, according to the release.

“With this new program, we hope to encourage more people to get out and enjoy all of McKinney’s natural beauty,” Mullins said.
