The McKinney Community Center has been renamed to the Recreation Center at Towne Lake.

McKinney City Council approved the center's new name during its July 22 council meeting, after Director of Parks and Recreation Michael Kowski provided an update on parks projects.

"This will give it a geographical location and also speaks better to what we’re providing at the center itself," Kowski said of the new name during his presentation.

In addition to its new name, the recreation center will also receive a new sign to help better identify the center, which is located at 2001 S. Central Expressway, McKinney.

The facility hosts programs such as dances; juggling; home school activities; and annual events, such as Breakfast with Santa and the Daddy Daughter Dance.

“Moving forward, new and existing elements within the park will benefit greatly from having the identifier ‘Towne Lake’ in its name to expand awareness of this landmark," Kowski said in a city news release. "This tactic will also help visitors since it places park elements, such as this facility, at a specific geographic location.”

The new monument and building signage will be installed later this fall, according to the news release. 972-547-2690. www.mckinneytexas.org/618/community-center
