Officials will begin installing new wayfinding signs across the city this summer as part of McKinney’s Wayfinding Master Plan, according to a city news release.

The first phase of new wayfinding signs will include vehicular, pedestrian and parking signs. The signs will provide directions and identify major attractions and districts, according to the news release.

In a nutshell

The first signs will be installed in the coming weeks and additional signage will be installed throughout the summer. Some signs have already been installed, a city spokesperson said.

Council members approved up to $2.35 million in February 2024 for a contract with Virginia-based Color-Ad for sign fabrication and installation.

The signs are designed to incorporate nature scenes and elements highlighting the city’s “Unique by Nature” brand, according to the news release. The new signage is funded by Mckinney’s Capital Improvements Program.

The Wayfinding Master Plan, approved by council in 2022, calls for 149 new signs to be implemented in two phases. The plan also includes kiosks located downtown with listed businesses and educational panels featuring information about the city’s history.

Multiple signs are planned throughout downtown McKinney and along major thoroughfares throughout the city, according to the plan.

Quote of note

“This project is all about making life a little easier for our residents and more welcoming for our visitors,” Mayor George Fuller said in a statement. “Whether someone is trying to find the downtown square, City Hall, a park, or a library, these signs will help get them there clearly, quickly, and with a sense of place that's uniquely McKinney.”
