The city of McKinney has been designated as a tourism friendly city by Travel Texas, a marketing program within the Texas Governor’s Economic Development and Tourism Office.

The Tourism Friendly Texas Certified Community designation is awarded after a multistep process that includes a self-assessment and online training. The program was created to encourage Texas communities to pursue tourism as an economic development strategy, according to Travel Texas’ website.

What they’re saying

McKinney Mayor George Fuller said in a statement that the certification from the governor’s office is a testament to the city's “vibrant spirit, rich history and commitment to welcoming visitors from near and far.”

“Tourism is not just an economic driver—it enriches the lives of our residents and enhances the fabric of our community,” he said. “We are proud to be recognized among Texas' premier destinations and will continue to make McKinney a place where every visitor feels at home.”

McKinney’s recognition as a Tourism Friendly Texas destination underscores its “diverse and dynamic experiences,” Visit McKinney Executive Director Aaron Werner said in a statement.

“Whether visitors come for our dynamic arts scene, live music, craft brewery, culinary experiences or historic charm, McKinney provides a uniquely welcoming and inspiring atmosphere,” Werner said. “These designations affirm our city's dedication to fostering creativity, culture and community, and we look forward to continuing to share McKinney’s story with travelers from all over."

Gov. Greg Abbott congratulated the city and Visit McKinney for earning the designation.

“Tourism is critical to both our local and state economies, supporting one in 11 jobs across Texas,” he said in a statement. “Travelers to and within Texas generate more than $193 billion in annual economic impact and support 1.3 million jobs across the state.”

About the program

Abbott announced the launch of the program in January 2024. In its inaugural year, multiple North Texas cities have received the designation in addition to McKinney, including Frisco and Plano.
