Project officials requested a rezoning for the project site to allow for the development of warehouse and administrative space that would be used by AT&T at a Feb. 25 McKinney Planning and Zoning Commission meeting. Commission members voted unanimously to recommend approval of the rezoning request, but final action on the item will come from McKinney City Council.
The details
The nearly 11-acre project site is located in southeast McKinney at the northwest corner of Airport Drive and Old Mill Road, just south of the existing Harry McKillop Boulevard and the future Spur 399 extension, according to city documents.
Land owner Mike Redeker of McKinEast said he was approached by representatives of telecommunications company AT&T that expressed interest in developing the site. The site is currently zoned for agriculture and residential uses, and the rezoning request would designate the site for light industrial uses.
The project would include 30,000 square feet of warehousing and administrative buildings for AT&T, project documents state. The facility would be used by the company’s field technicians that would be dispatched to service customers in the area.
The facility would be used by 250 employees and is an estimated $5 million investment, city documents state. The project would also support the company’s high speed telecommunications network.
What else?
Three community members spoke at the meeting, all expressing opposition to the development. Speakers referenced concerns related to noise from warehouse operations as well as the potential impact to existing nature.
City staff recommended approval of the rezoning request, city planning staff member Jake Bennett said at the meeting, noting that the site is adjacent to other industrial uses near McKinney National Airport.
While the commission recommended approval of the rezoning request, McKinney City Council members will take final action on the request at a March 18 meeting, meeting documents state.
