The city of McKinney experienced a data breach in late 2024, and personal information may have been exposed, city officials said.

The breach, announced in a Feb. 3 news release, occurred Oct. 31, 2024 and was identified on Nov 14, 2024. For those with a mailing address on file, letters were mailed Feb. 4 that will notify impacted individuals of the incident.

The details

Following identification of the data breach, city officials engaged forensic consultants to investigate the incident, reported the incident to law enforcement and secured city systems, the release states.

The investigation identified that some personal or sensitive information within the city’s systems may have been exposed. Possible exposed information may include:
  • Social Security number
  • Driver’s license number
  • Credit card information
  • Financial account information
  • Medical insurance information
The city is unaware of any actual or attempted misuse of any information exposed in the data breach, the release states.


“Privacy and security are our top priorities. We deeply regret that this incident occurred and will continue to implement the most stringent security protocols available to prevent incidents like this one in the future,” the city news release states.
