A potential charter amendment election could be up for consideration on the November general election ballot in McKinney.

McKinney City Council members appointed a charter review committee of 21 people to review specific elements of the city charter, including council member term lengths and limits, at a May 21 meeting.

The gist

Council members discussed a potential charter amendment election at a May 7 work session meeting and determined a citizen committee would review the charter.

Council identified four focus areas for the committee to review, including:
  • Term lengths
  • Term limits
  • Council compensation
  • Composition of council member districts
Other items will also be considered for review by the committee, including miscellaneous administrative items, instituting an automatic 10-year charter review process and other items that may arise during the review process.

Following a series of meetings focused on each identified topic, the committee's findings will be presented to council members ahead of a potential charter amendment election being called, according to a presentation at the meeting.

Council members will ultimately decide if the election should be called and what would be included, according to city documents. To be included on the November general election ballot, the election must be called by Aug. 19, according to the Texas Secretary of State’s website.
