A project to develop over 50 townhomes in west McKinney was unanimously approved by McKinney City Council members at a Jan. 2 meeting.

The details

The project by homebuilder D.R. Horton is expected to bring 53 townhomes to a 6.6-acre site in west McKinney, according to a presentation at the meeting. The development, referred to as Westridge Townhomes in city documents, is located at the northwest corner of the intersection of Independence Parkway and Virginia Parkway.

The townhomes will be built in both four-home and five-home building configurations, according to city documents. The homes will have a minimum lot size of 1,900 square feet with a 90-foot lot depth, and each will have a two-car garage.

The action taken

The council members unanimously approved a request to rezone the property and to allow for deviations in the development standards.

The variances requested included:
  • Decreasing minimum setback requirements for the depths of front yards as well as side yards adjacent to roadways
  • Amending minimum tree requirements to allow for ornamental trees to be planted in front yards rather than canopy trees
Quote of note

“We need more starter homes in McKinney, and I’ve said before on this dais that homes are parts, they’re labor and they’re land. If we can mitigate the land, then that helps make these more affordable, and it appears as though these will be, and these are the kinds of things that we need in McKinney,” council member Patrick Cloutier said.
