McKinney City Council voted to have a potential ethics code violation filed against Council Member La’Shadion Shemwell further investigated during a Dec. 17 council meeting.
A McKinney resident filed an ethics complaint against Shemwell, which stated that Shemwell violated the city's code of conduct by speaking untruthfully during recent meetings, according to city officials.
Council was given the option either to dismiss the allegations or to have a third-party attorney investigate more thoroughly if they believed that “sufficient cause exists to suggest a civil violation may have occurred,” according to city attorney Mark Houser.
Shemwell defended his actions, saying that he has only given his subjective opinion. However, council voted unanimously to have the complaint investigated further.
The complaint filed against Shemwell has not been made public, but Community Impact Newspaper filed an open records request for the document Dec. 17.
