Editor's note: This article has been updated to include the correct cost for new construction at Bonnie Wenk Park, which totals $9.2 million as compared to the $2.4 million previously reported. This article has also been updated to identify which parks are undergoing new construction, master planning and renovations.
The McKinney Parks and Recreation Department has plans to construct and renovate several new and existing facilities throughout McKinney. The department determines how to enhance parks and recreational facilities through public input meetings and online voting boards, in which residents can voice their suggestions and concerns, and vote on proposed amenities. The department then takes the residents’ feedback into account when planning for the construction of new and improved parks facilities.
On June 26 the department requested $5.5 million from the McKinney Community Development Corp. to fund a variety of proposed improvements. The MCDC board will make their decision during a meeting Sept. 18.
Michael Kowski, McKinney’s Parks and Recreation Department director, said McKinney has approximately 40 parks covering nearly 3,000-acres of land.
“I see the role of parks and open space—above and beyond sustaining natural landscapes and supporting economic development—as providing the backdrop for people to create memories, push themselves to reach their potential and make lifelong friends in the process,” Kowski said.
Here are 10 parks and recreation facilities the McKinney Parks and Recreation Department is currently renovating or has plans to soon renovate:
