Over 140 donated items are on display at the Collin County History Museum before they are to be buried in a time capsule until 2061.

The Collin County Veterans Memorial Time Capsule is an initiative of the McKinney Armed Services Memorial Board. The board accepted items associated with military service donated by community members to include in the capsule. Over 140 donated items will be on display at the museum, located at 300 E. Virginia St., until Dec. 10, according to a news release.

The items include military challenge coins, uniform patches, dog tags, medals, ribbons, books and more, representing services from seven wars. Included in the items are two pieces of explosion shrapnel, one from Vietnam and the other from Iraq.

The items and capsule will be buried on Dec. 17 at McKinney’s Veterans Memorial Park, located at 6053 Weiskopf Ave. The capsule will be unearthed on Nov. 11, 2061, to commemorate the 50-year anniversary of the dedication of the veterans memorial at the park, held on Nov. 11, 2011. The items and capsule will be donated to the Collin County History Museum after the 2061 opening.
