1. Collin College partners with Texas A&M for engineering academy
Collin College and Texas A&M University launched a new program for prospective engineers Feb. 14, according to a news release from Collin College. The Texas A&M Engineering Academy at Collin College will allow students to complete their first two years of coursework at Collin College before finishing their engineering degrees at Texas A&M in College Station, according to the release. The first cohort is set to enroll in fall 2024, with applications closing June 15.
2. Collin College shutting down 4 programs due to low demand
Collin College will shut down four programs due to low demand. During its May 28 meeting, Collin College’s board of trustees unanimously approved the closure of the following programs:
- Activity care professional
- Construction technology-carpentry
- Construction technology-facilities management
- Metal arts
A new initiative from Collin College will allow students the opportunity to obtain a degree from a four-year university without leaving Collin County. Collin College is partnering with Texas State University and The University of Texas at Dallas to create the Collin College Academic Alliance, a new higher education opportunity, according to an Aug. 13 news release.
4. Collin College board maintains tax rate for FY 2024-25, approves budget, pay increases
Collin County residents can expect to pay the same property tax rate to Collin College for the 2024-25 fiscal year. The college’s board of trustees unanimously approved a tax rate of $0.081220 per $100 valuation during an Aug. 27 board meeting. This is the third year in a row the college has operated at this tax rate, according to Collin County documents.
5. Collin College to expand health science program with new $70M center
A new health sciences center is coming to Collin College’s Frisco campus. The 120,000-square-foot center will provide additional space for the college’s current health science programs while creating spaces for new programs, said Mark Smith, provost of the Collin College McKinney campus, in an email. The project is estimated to cost approximately $70 million and is expected to open in spring 2027.
