Collin College and Texas A&M University launched a new program for prospective engineers Feb. 14, according to a news release from Collin College.

What you need to know

The Texas A&M Engineering Academy at Collin College will allow students to complete their first two years of coursework at Collin College before finishing their engineering degrees at Texas A&M in College Station, according to the release.

The first cohort is set to enroll in fall 2024, with applications closing June 15. The program will be based at Collin College’s Technical Campus at 2550 Bending Branch Way in Allen.

Students will also have the opportunity to participate in activities and organizations at both colleges.

“We are thrilled to partner with Texas A&M University to create this new engineering academy at Collin College’s Technical Campus, where we’ve enjoyed such a supportive and longstanding relationship with the community,” Collin College District President Neil Matkin said in the release. “The [program] will provide students with the opportunity to be Aggies from day one, take Collin College core classes and earn associate degrees at the college’s exceptional tuition.”

Why it matters

The co-enrollment program was launched to “address the state’s growing need for engineers,” according to the release. The projected need for engineers in Texas is 51,000 by 2028.

“Collin County is rapidly becoming a hub for industries seeking innovative, career-ready college graduates,” Collin College board of trustees Chair Andrew Hardin said. “We truly believe that this partnership will help build a stronger economy and ensure a rewarding future for our students and the Texas workforce.”
