McKinney ISD students will return to school Aug. 12, 2025.

The district’s board of trustees approved the academic calendar Dec. 16. Assistant Superintendent Shelly Spaulding presented the proposed calendar to the board.

The approach

The process started in July with an academic calendar cohort consisting of surrounding school districts and representatives from Collin College. The cohort discusses calendar start and end dates for the school year and scheduling breaks that are consistent with Collin College, Spaulding said.

All districts in the cohort use Collin College for dual credit courses and aligning breaks is needed for students in those courses, she said.

Other calendar considerations are including the required 187 contract days for teachers and the 75,600 of instructional minutes required for students.

The overview

The 2025-26 school year begins Aug. 12, 2025. Staff will return to school Aug. 1 for professional development. Spaulding explained district officials wanted to avoid staff returning in July.

Here are some important dates to note for students:
  • Fall break: Oct. 13-17
  • Thanksgiving break: Nov. 24-28
  • Winter break: Dec. 22-Jan. 2, 2026
  • Spring break: March 16-20, 2026
  • Last day of school: May 21, 2026
