McKinney ISD will offer personal financial literacy and economics education through a newly selected curriculum source.

The overview

The district will use Ramsey Education’s “Foundations in Personal Finance” curriculum for the 2024-28 school years, according to an Aug. 21 district news release.

Ramsey Education is the educational arm of Ramsey Solutions, which was founded by financial adviser and radio host Dave Ramsey.

“I’ve listened and read a lot of Dave Ramsey’s materials, and the principles he and Ramsey Education teaches are a no-brainer,” MISD Superintendent Shawn Pratt said in the release. “Our goal with the 'Foundations' curriculum is our students walk out of here equipped with a plan and know how to have a budget, whether they’re going into the workforce immediately to help support their family or whether they’re going to college.”

The context

According to a 2023 report from Ramsey Solutions, 88% of adults said high school did not leave them fully prepared for handling money, the release states.

The decision meets the district’s requirements of the State Board of Education’s Proclamation 2024, which outlines guidelines for adopting instructional materials, the release states. The proclamation was announced by the board of education in April 2022. The mandate requires updated instructional materials for Texas schools in the 2024-25 school year, according to the release.
