The district’s board of trustees approved the upgrades totaling $1.63 million during an April 22 meeting.
The backstory
The 2021 bond program earmarked $2 million for playground upgrades.
The district recently had the playground equipment supplier We Build Fun review playground equipment and fall zone areas at all elementary school campuses, according to the agenda.
The playgrounds meet Americans with Disabilities Act requirements, but the upgrades will create a firmer travel surface that will make the playgrounds more inclusive for students, the agenda stated.
What to expect
Playground upgrades to MISD’s elementary schools will be completed in two phases in summer 2024 and 2025. District officials reached out to elementary schools and the special populations department to prioritize which schools should be completed in 2024, the agenda stated.
The following elementary schools will receive upgrades in 2024:
- Bennett
- Eddins
- Malvern
- McClure
- McGowen
- McNeil
- Press
- Slaughter
- Webb
- Wolford
The district’s remaining elementary schools will be completed during summer 2025. Work on the first phase will begin June 1 and be completed prior to the start of school, per the agenda.
