McKinney ISD officials have been recognized for excellence in financial operations in the district.

The 2023-24 Meritorious Budget Award, given by the Association of School Business Officials International, and the 2024 Award of Excellence in Financial Management from the Texas Association of School Business Officials were two honors given to the district, according to a Jan. 11 news release.

“We are so proud and honored that all the hours of review of every component of our financial management and budget process has been officially recognized by TASBO and ASBO International,” MISD Chief Financial Officer Marlene Harbeson said in the release.

The Meritorious Budget Award recognizes quality in school budget presentation, the release states. District officials submit their budget documents to school financial professionals who then review the materials and provide feedback on how districts can improve their budget documentation.


The TASBO Award of Excellence in Financial Management recognized districts, charter schools and education service centers that have implemented professional standards and innovations in financial reporting, the release states. The award this year was granted to 32 districts across the state. Evaluation components include:“This is the first time to receive both of these prestigious awards, and we couldn’t be more excited to see our efforts acknowledged,” Harbeson said.
