The elevators at McKinney Boyd High School are getting a refresh at the end of the school year.

The district’s board of trustees approved the $194,287 renovations at its Sept. 25 meeting. The cost includes replacing and refurbishing the elevator’s mechanical and electrical components, according to the proposal.

A closer look

McKinney Boyd opened in 2006 with one elevator that services the academic portion of the building and another in the athletic wing, according to the agenda.

The age of the elevators make them hard to repair as it is difficult to find parts. Due to this, the elevators have been out of service for multiple days during the school year, the agenda states.

The 2021 bond election included $23 million for the refresh of McKinney Boyd, which is on on schedule to be refreshed in 2026. Renovating the elevators now will move up the refresh project by two years, the agenda states.

Across the district, elevators have been standardized to TK Elevator to simplify:
  • Inspections
  • Repairs
  • Maintenance
The cost for renovations is $174,287. District officials recommended adding a $20,000 allowance for unseen issues, bringing the total cost to $194,287, per the agenda.

Going forward

After the purchase order is completed, TK Elevator expects it to take 32 weeks, roughly seven months, to receive the materials needed for the renovation, the agenda states. The elevator renovations will begin on the last day of school May 29 and will be completed no later than Aug. 1.
