About 23,000 students are expected to fill McKinney ISD classrooms in August at the start of the 2023-24 school year, according to district officials. Here are some school essentials to know for the upcoming school year.

  • First day of school: Aug. 9
  • State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness scores released: Aug. 16
  • Thanksgiving break: Nov. 20-24
  • Winter break: Dec. 22-Jan. 8
  • Spring break: March 11-18
  • Last day of school: May 23
  • High school graduation ceremonies: May 24
School hours

Hours for each school level vary in McKinney ISD.
  • Elementary school: 8 a.m.-3:07 p.m.
  • Middle school: 8:45 a.m.-3:52 p.m.
  • High school: 7:30 a.m.-2:37 p.m.
Take the bus

McKinney ISD uses Durham School Services to transport about 10,600 students each day, according to the MISD website. Daily transportation operations across the district requires 155 buses that travel over 100 routes.


Bus services are available for students who live 2 or more miles from their assigned school. Bus routes and times are available at www.mckinneyisd.net/transportation. Parents can also call 972-542-8316 to speak to a dispatcher.

The registration deadline for students needing bus transportation is July 20, and registrations received after the deadline will require a 5- to 10-day routing delay, according to the district website.

Lunch lineup

Daily menus for meals offered at each MISD campus are available at https://mckinney.schooldish.com/schoolmenus. For students with specific dietary needs and allergies, parents can contact [email protected] for assistance in meal modifications. Eligible parents can apply for free or reduced-price lunches at www.mckinneyisd.net/school-nutrition/free-reduced-meals.


Student dress code

The districtwide dress code is outlined in the student handbook, and offers guidance on personal dress and grooming standards required by the district. The dress code is intended to teach grooming and hygiene as well as prevent disruption and reduce safety hazards, according to the district website.

Some of the personal dress standards required of students by the dress code include:
  • No items that display offensive or drug-related language or pictures
  • No hats, bandanas, hoods or sunglasses
  • No pants, shorts or skirts worn below the waist
