Why are you running?

After attending all board meetings in MISD but five over the last three years, I have identified areas where my depth and breadth of experience would be helpful. This includes more complete capital bond management practices; an improved and focused safety program starting with a monthly safety report, including incidents reviews; improved transparency and involvement of the public through workshops and forums. I believe we need to include teachers' administrative decisions affecting them.

What are you hoping to accomplish if you are elected?

I intend to lower the conflict level. Then we need an action plan for school rating performance with goals and metrics for the superintendent. Significant improvement in transparency involving the bright minds in our community for improving trust and performance. The upside is huge for a paradigm shift to a participation and inclusion-centered workforce culture. This will significantly refocus MISD toward inclusion of all stakeholders. Public speaking goes back to three minutes.
What are the top issues McKinney ISD is facing in the coming years?

Teacher recruitment, retention and development is critical. Watchful governance of all district activities will provide relevant discussion in all open meetings on most consent agenda items and not just a unified rubber stamp with no discussion. Appropriate audits of all programs to demonstrate that the general welfare is secure. A complete review of curriculum to focus on preventing CRT, SEL(E) which pushes our core curriculum out.

What are some new ideas or programs you would like the district to explore?

A [science, technology, engineering and math] director should be installed to mirror the current fine arts director. We must get math and science performance up. The use of project-based learning is a proven performance improver. I've seen it first hand. Science fairs at all schools.

Why are you running?

I am passionate about public education being available for all children. Our children are the greatest asset for our future. I want everyone to know about the great programs we offer and how well our students perform. I am fighting against the misinformation about our curriculum. I will not allow our teachers to be falsely criticized. Teachers must be respected for the hard work they do, which is evident by our 98% graduation rate.

What are you hoping to accomplish if you are elected?

I will make sure we continue to offer career and technical programs in our schools and continue our partnership with Collin College. I would like to see us expand the number of students we can put in these classes, including aviation and robotics. I will also publicize our student success stories to enforce the fact that our district is thriving.

What are the top issues McKinney ISD is facing in the coming years?

The safety of our students will always be our No. 1 priority. We will invest the resources necessary to make sure our students are safe. We must also treat our teachers as the professionals that they are, and this means increasing their pay as the budget allows. The state budget will determine many of our budget items.

What are some new ideas or programs you would like the district to explore?

I would like to see a culinary/hospitality course offered for our students. I want our teachers to focus on student success, and I want to reduce responsibilities not related to academics so our teachers can feel supported. I hope to explore more ways to communicate with parents so they will continue to trust MISD with their children.

Why are you running?

I am a natural leader who has been actively engaged in this wonderful community for 10 years and worked within schools as both a substitute and volunteer for 20 years. I am involved in the homeschool community as well as public school. I communicate regularly with teachers and families about the challenges they face in school and in education and we work to find solutions together.

What are you hoping to accomplish if you are elected?

Work with the board to create common sense policies that put students first.
Strong academic program with high-quality instructional materials, including appropriate use of technology
Effective district and campus educational improvement planning committees to oversee budgets, curriculum, staffing and safety at each campus
Support teachers in the classroom with accountability for student work and behavior.
Partner with our parents to equip, empower and engage them in their child's education.
What are the top issues McKinney ISD is facing in the coming years?
Teacher turnover and retention. We are losing good teachers. We need to address their workload and the issues in the classroom that affect the learning environment and their desire to teach.
Enrollment is declining. We lost 1,200 students just within the last three years. We need to find out why families are leaving the district. This is affecting our school funding. School safety—principals, teachers and administrators are dealing with increased student behavior issues.
What are some new ideas or programs you would like the district to explore?

We need to operate as an independent school district with an elected board representing the taxpayers not the [Texas Education Agency]. We need to build a traditional educational program with a strong foundation in language and math in the early elementary years and build on it each year. Bring back an emphasis on grammar, logic and rhetoric. Appropriate use of technology. Stop chasing educational fads and learning theories. Give teachers the ability to master their profession.
