McKinney ISD’s 2023-24 school year will begin Aug. 9, 2023, and end May 23, 2024. The school board approved the proposed calendar Oct. 24.

MISD Chief Communications Officer Cody Cunningham said the upcoming school year calendar has a few “minor changes” from the calendar this year. District staff met with a group of districts in the area along with Collin College and the University of North Texas to align their calendars, Cunningham said. This includes moving the district’s spring break to March 11-15 to align with Collin College.

“This really makes sense because so many of our students are taking dual-credit courses, so that’s helpful,” Cunningham said.

The district starting school earlier in the year also allows the district to have a few more holidays during the school year, which helps students and teachers avoid burnout, Cunningham said.

Another difference is in December, he said. The winter break will start a little later, starting the holiday Dec. 22 and going through Jan. 8. It is something many of the neighboring districts are planning to do for their winter breaks as well, Cunningham said.

In addition to these changes, the calendar includes six dedicated teacher workdays before school starts, a teacher exchange day in October and another in May, and staff development days throughout the year.

In addition to the winter and spring breaks, student holidays include Sept. 4, Oct. 9, Nov. 20-24, Jan. 15, Feb. 16 and March 29. April 15 and 29 have been set aside as bad-weather days.

“I think this is a really good calendar that tries to take into consideration instruction and at the same time being respectful of holidays and giving everyone a break,” Cunningham said.

The calendar was adopted unanimously without discussion.
