As McKinney ISD prepares to break ground on its new $62.8 million football stadium, district officials are working to promote sports safety by holding a meeting between emergency personnel and MISD athletic trainers.

In April, trainers from each of McKinney ISD’s three high schools met with McKinney Fire Department and the emergency department at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center-McKinney to discuss response procedures and responsibilities in the event of a serious medical issue involving an athlete.

According to district officials, MISD athletic trainers are highly trained, licensed health care providers, most of whom hold master’s degrees. Discussion at the meeting included determining ideal emergency access points, face mask removal techniques and moving an injured player from the field to medical transportation.

District officials said the trainer's role is crucial, adding that most of the trainer's time is spent acting as  liaisons between coaches, parents, athletes and doctors.
