McKinney City Council agreed to amend the city’s disaster act following an April 27 announcement from Gov. Greg Abbott allowing businesses to reopen.

Council met April 28 for a special meeting to discuss the impact of Abbott's announcement and how to stay in step with his orders.

The purpose of the action is to bring the city’s disaster act in line with the governor’s, Mayor George Fuller said.

The council also amended its disaster act so it would be able to adopt any changes Abbott might issue in the future.

“We will follow whatever the governor has dictated for the state of Texas, ultimately,” Fuller said.

The council did change some wording at its discretion, allowing that city boards “may” be able to meet in person rather than “shall” meet in person.

With businesses allowed to reopen May 1 at 25% capacity, the city plans to use building fire codes to calculate that percentage.

Fuller and other members of council encouraged residents to practice caution and stay safe.
