Wilson Creek Trail in east McKinney is the only Texas trail to join the National Trail System this year, according to a news release.

The designation, given by the U.S. Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland, adds the trail to the National Trails System, a network of over 1,300 existing national recreation trails. The trail system can be found in every U.S. state, as well as the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, according to the release.

“We are truly honored to receive this national designation and thankful to all our community partners, volunteers and city staff who work every day to grow and enhance the Wilson Creek Trail,” Parks and Recreation Director Michael Kowski said in the release.

McKinney’s Wilson Creek Trail is a nearly 10-mile trail system located in east McKinney. The trail connects Bonnie Wenk Park to Towne Lake Park, and offers access to playgrounds, an outdoor fitness court, a disc golf course and other open spaces, according to the release. The trail also includes a dog park loop just under half a mile long.

Over 80% of respondents in a recent survey of McKinney residents identified expanding and connecting the hike and bike trail system as a priority.

“We believe that our trails network can serve as the great connector within our community,” Kowski said in the release. “Residents and visitors alike will be happy to know that we will continue to focus our resources on expanding and improving this system throughout the community to unite people and places in unique ways.”
