McKinney officials are looking for volunteers to conduct the annual count of the city’s homeless population.

Point In Time counts, named for their occurrence on a “single night in January,” provide homeless population numbers to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and are used to determine the funding local nonprofits and city resources receive, according to a newsletter from the city.

These counts traditionally total up all people staying at various emergency shelters and transitional housing locations, according to HUD.

The McKinney Housing and Community Development Department is partnering with the Collin County Homeless Coalition to recruit volunteers and organize the count. During the count itself, volunteers will also be offering resources and supplies as well as completing a survey.

The count is scheduled for Jan. 26 from 5:30-10:00 p.m. Interested volunteers can sign up here.
