The city of McKinney has confirmed a mosquito pool tested positive for West Nile virus.
In an effort to control mosquitos, the city will begin spraying at 10 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, weather permitting, according to a news release from the city.
"The positive mosquito pool was identified at 301 Peregrine (CT Eddins Elementary)," McKinney Health Compliance Supervisor Richard Milam said via email. "The spray will only kill adult mosquitoes that it comes into contact with. The virus is carried in the bird population, and the mosquitoes are vectors between birds and humans."
Signs will be posted to notify residents of spray activity in the major intersections of spray areas, according to the release. The general spray area will include north of South Cotton Ridge Road, west of Stonebridge Drive, south of Hwy. 380 and east of Independence Parkway.
"Residents in the spray area should try to stay indoors during this time to avoid spray," Milam said. "Bring pets and animal food bowls indoors as well."
Residents who do not want their homes to be sprayed must contact the city of McKinney Health Compliance at 972-547-7447 by 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, according to the release.
