City begins smoke testing sewer systems Wednesday

The city of McKinney will begin conducting routine surveys of the city’s sanitary sewer systems through smoke testing Wednesday, Sept. 13.[/caption]

The city of McKinney will begin conducting routine surveys of the city’s sanitary sewer systems. This testing will be done through smoke testing, which requires crews to access manholes and force air with nontoxic smoke into the sewer mains. The smoke leaves no residue, disappears quickly, creates no fire hazard and is harmless, according to the release.

This test will locate any leaks and nonpermitted connections, according to a press release from the city. If a defect is found, smoke will be seen coming up from the ground or other unexpected locations.

Testing will be done between 7 a.m.-4 p.m. and notifications will be given to those immediately impacted prior to testing. Signs will also be posted at intersections where crews are testing. More information about the testing can be found on the city’s website.
