At tonight's City Council meeting, council approved a variety of agenda items, including body cameras for the McKinney Police Department. Here is what residents need to know about what was approved at the meeting.

Body cameras approved for McKinney Police Department

Council unanimously approved the purchase of body cameras for the McKinney Police Department. The cameras; associated hardware; software; and services from Watch Guard, the supplier, will total $340,204.08, according to city documents.

This will be the first time city patrol officers will wear body cameras. School resource officers, neighborhood police officers, motorcycle officers and the mounted unit already have these cameras, said Denise Lessard, communications and media manager for the city, in an email.

Council sets ceiling of tax rate for fiscal year 2017-18

Council also approved a ceiling tax rate of $0.5626 for the fiscal year 2017-18 budget, which is higher than the adopted FY 2016-17 tax rate.

Because the ceiling rate is higher than last year's adopted rate, two public hearings will be held Aug. 15 and Sept. 5.

Tonight's approved ceiling tax rate is $0.022401 more than the proposed tax rate in the budget, which is $0.540199. The tax rate will be set and approved at the budget work session on Friday at 8:30 a.m. at the John and Judy Gay Library, 6861 Eldorado Parkway, McKinney.
