The city of McKinney has been without public transit since November 2015, but City Council approved two items tonight that got the city two steps closer to reinstating public transit.

The first item allows city staffers to pursue grant funding from the Texas Department of Public Transportation. The second item allows staffers to request direct recipient status from the Federal Transit Authority.

The city has yet to announce the type of service it will provide.

City officials said McKinney will meet with the other cities within the McKinney Urbanized Area, which is designated by the Federal Transit Authority, to determine next steps and levels of transit to be provided.

The cities within the MUZA include Celina, Lowry Crossing, Melissa, McKinney, Prosper and Princeton.
