The proposed decrease would drop the property tax rate from $0.5830 to $0.5770 per $100 taxable value. This rate exceeds the effective or rollback tax rate, and state law requires two public hearings before adopting the proposed tax rate because of this. The effective tax rate is the rate needed to raise the same amount of property tax revenue as was raised in the 2015 tax year. The city proposes to use the increased tax revenue for public safety staffing and associated equipment. The city will hold its first public hearing on the proposed tax rate at 6 p.m. Aug. 22. The second hearing will take place Sept. 6. Council will take no action during either meeting. The rate will be set and the budget will be adopted during the Sept. 22 council meeting. The FY 2016-17 tax rate will go in effect beginning Oct. 1. For more information, visit the city's website.
