According to Don Day, every city needs a “Grand Hotel.” “I read a lot, and in books there’s always a ‘Grand Hotel,’ so we had to have one in McKinney,” said Day, who co-owns The Grand Hotel & Ballroom located in downtown McKinney. The 24,000-square-foot boutique hotel offers 43 rooms, a ballroom, a fitness center, room service, wedding packages and three meeting rooms accommodating between 25-75 people each. The Grand Hotel opened above Rick’s Chophouse in 2007 with 14 rooms. Day said he used to live in Fredericksburg and was inspired by a hotel leading him to open one in McKinney. “In downtown Fredericksburg there was a small hotel with about 10 rooms, and I thought [it] was really neat, and it was above a restaurant,” he said. “Since I was putting a restaurant [in McKinney] I thought, ‘Well, why don’t we do that here?’ And that was my first venture in hotels.” In 2009 the Day family, who owns and operates the hotel, decided to expand the hotel by demolishing a one-story building and building a four-story structure in its place, Day said. This allowed the hotel to more than triple its room count. But the growth did not stop there, according to the Day family. The Grand Hotel is anticipated to expand its services Nov. 1 by offering five extended-stay suites at 205 W. Louisiana St., which is located across the street from the hotel’s current footprint. These suites will include a small kitchen area, Day said. Hotel Manager Jacque Day said she gets a lot of requests for extended-stay rooms. “There are lots of hotel rooms [in McKinney], but it’s hard to get hotel rooms in downtown,” Don said. “A lot of people come and stay here because they want to be able to walk around. … And because downtown is built out, it’s hard to add more rooms. … We add where we can.”
