Inside a gym in McKinney, a group of 19 people get ready for their evening workout. In groups of four, people rotate from one workout station to the next lifting weights, doing squat lifts, tire flips and swinging heavy ropes.

Meanwhile pushing them, encouraging them and working alongside them are the husband-and-wife team, coaches and owners of R&G Fitness, Beau and Jamie Smith.

R&G Fitness, which stands for rise and grind, opened in McKinney in October 2016, but Beau and Jamie said they had been coaching boot camps long before opening R&G Fitness.

“It’s really been a grass-roots kind of thing, where it started with 10 people in a small park in Allen and grew to where we’re at now at 80-85 members in our own gym,” Beau said.

Beau, who grew up in McKinney, has always been an athlete. He played basketball at McKinney High School and throughout college in California and Nebraska. However, Beau said he never thought that fitness would end up becoming his career.

“I always thought I was going to be rockin’ some suits or something; that’s why I studied business in college,” Beau said. “I never thought it would have come to this—owning my own gym—but I’m really happy it did.”

At R&G Fitness, Beau and Jamie focus on two different aspects of training: strength training to build muscle and using that muscle to burn fat.

“We try to get [people] strong by building that muscle for four weeks; then after that we have a high-intensity workout. So we build your body and then we break you down,” Beau said.

Jamie works at the gym part-time. She said she plans to work at the gym full-time sometime this summer, which will allow R&G Fitness to add more class times and offer more personal training.

“The only reason I think we’re different is because every person means so much to us,” Beau said. “... Our success is predicated on our [clients] doing well. That’s where my passion stems from because I know how important this can be for somebody, and [fitness] can change the trajectory in someone else’s life.”
