Mike and Devra Kelly have turned their passion for dogs into a business that seeks to assist fellow dog lovers as well as be a resource for the community.

In addition to a grooming service, The Mutt Puddle offers a somewhat unique opportunity for owners to bathe their canines in the self-service area.

The Mutt Puddle“Back in the ’80s, I came up with an idea to open a do-it-yourself dog wash because there was nothing like that around,” Devra said. “We offer the only location in Collin County where owners have the ability to come in and bathe their dog in an elevated ergo tub.”

The Mutt Puddle has been open for close to nine years, and the Kellys have owned it for almost three of those years, beginning first as clients of the business.

The business has two locations—3180 Eldorado Parkway at the corner of Eldorado and Hardin Boulevard and 190 E. Stacy Road in Allen across from the dog park in The Village at Allen shopping center.

“The business had been in our minds a lot of years and in line with what we’ve done with our rescue dog efforts,” Devra said. “We always dreamed when we got close to retirement we’d be in a business like this. We just love the dogs.”

Mike said The Mutt Puddle is not just about grooming animals.

“Part of our business model is to give back to the community,” he said. “We also enjoy the people we get to meet, and we get to help dogs a lot. Sometimes the casual sharing of information becomes a valuable resource. We aren’t vets, but we’ve been able to share what has worked for us.”

The owners said they consider their clients friends and family.

“The toughest part of the job is that we get so attached to the dogs and they become part of our family,” Devra said. “A customer will bring their dog in and we know it’s for their last groom, and we all just sit and cry together.”

The Kellys just acquired their 55th rescue foster dog. They have been involved with the rescue and foster dogs for 15 years.

“Most of our customers share our love for rescues,” Devra said.

The Kellys said they pride themselves in hiring the kind of people who also care about the dogs.

“Kim Mygrant, who works to provide bulletproof vests for K-9 service dogs, is an example of the type of employee we want who cares about animals and is incredibly involved with pet-related causes,” Mike said. “We want that kind of community commitment.”

In addition, Mutt Puddle groomers have nearly 100 years of combined experience.

“Grooming is such a specialty, and we have the most talented groomers,” Mike said. “A good groomer is a gem, especially if you consider the work they have to do. They are using a
sharp instrument on a moving, elevated target with teeth.”
