During Tuesday night’s City Council meeting, the council approved to amend the budget by appropriating $41,500 in the public art fund to provide funding for a mosaic on the Chestnut Commons parking garage, located at the northeast corner of Chestnut and Virginia streets in downtown McKinney.

The Sanchez Group, who is developing the parking garage, will donate 50 percent of the cost of the mosaic, according to city documents.

The McKinney Arts Commission mosaic subcommittee will discuss the three final submissions during its meeting next week. During this time, the subcommittee will make a recommendation to the MAC for a selected artist, and a final recommendation will go before the City Council, city spokesperson Denise Lessard said in an email.

Artists will be paid $500 for their preliminary designs and $20,000 for a mural contract, according to the call to artists.

Construction on the parking garage is expected to be complete this summer.
