At Monday's Flower Mound Town Council meeting, members unanimously voted to approve a request for a master plan amendment to the town's thoroughfare plan that would designate Morriss Road as a four-lane road.

The amendment changes the designation of Morriss Road from a Major Arterial to a specified Urban Minor Arterial-Divided roadway between Justin Road/FM 407 and Flower Mound Road/FM 3040 and removes text related to Morriss Road being six lanes.

If a future council wanted to change the destination back, they could. They would be required to go through the same steps as it took to change the road to an Urban Minor Arterial road.

"It does not prohibit this from happening in the future," Council Member Kevin Bryant said.

Council Member Claudio Forest voted in favor of the request but does not see the need to change it on the master plan.

"I'm not convinced this is the best thing to do," he said. "I don't really know the need to change this on the master plan amendment. I'm not convinced, but I don't want to hold this up either."

The need to replace a failing waterline under portions of Morriss Road spurred Flower Mound officials to take a look at possibly expanding the roadway.

Although the road will not get expanded, the town is moving forward with replacing the failing water line, replacing panels and adding Americans with Disabilities Acts improvements, such as sidewalks and signalized intersections.

The water line replacement will be from Forest Vista Drive to Garden Road and is estimated to cost $1 million.

The council also approved additional improvements to Morriss Road, primarily between Flower Mound Road/FM 3040 and Cross Timbers Road/FM 1171.

The council agreed on the following improvements: FM 3040 intersection improvements, Garden intersection improvements, a three-way stop at Garden and Firewheel Drive, extending the southbound left turn at Forest Vista and adding warning signs at curves.

The council will meet again to discuss further improvements needed for the road.
