Original: Flower Mound Town Council voted June 21 to approve a contract to demolish an old natatorium building and smaller communications building formerly owned by Lewisville ISD.
The buildings are located on 7.425 acres of land adjacent to the Helen & Leonard Johns Community Park. The demolition of the buildings will cost $595,519, according to a staff memo.
The town purchased the land from the district for an active park. Future plans could include building a cultural arts center with a performance theater there, the memo stated. Recommendations call for the center to focus on music and performance, but it could also include a gallery and classroom space, according to the memo. Other possible improvements at site include trails, landscaping, overlooks of the pond, additional parking and lighting.
Town officials are still evaluating whether to renovate an existing administration building on that property.
The town will be reimbursed for all demolition costs through a Cultural Arts Commission grant allocated during the 2019 session of the Texas Legislature, according to the staff memo.
