Lewisville City Council paved the way for smaller apartments to be built in Old Town.

The council voted unanimously Aug. 2 to change the minimum unit size from 650 square feet to 500 square feet in the Old Town mixed use district.

"The goal of these reductions is to reduce unnecessary cost barriers to housing, to acknowledge trends of smaller studio and one-bedroom units, and to have increased consistency through the code," Lewisville Planning Director Robert Luedke said in a memo.

The amendment approved would allow for smaller-sized units but require an average of 650 square feet for units throughout a project, according to the city.

Examples of projects in Lewisville that already include 500-square-foot units with an average unit size of 650 square feet include Norra and Heritage Towers within the Villages at Lewisville, Legacy Northern Gateway at the southwest corner of I-35E and Grandys Lane, and Fronterra, according to the city.
