In 2014 Lewisville City Council approved funding for a program to install automatic fire sprinkler systems in the city's Old Town Historic District. Since that time staff has been working with the owners of the buildings in Old Town to voluntarily agree to the installation of the fire-protection systems in their buildings. Although most have agreed to install fire-protection systems, Council felt it was necessary to pass an ordinance at its Monday meeting that requires all buildings in the historic district to be protected with automatic fire sprinkler and fire-detection systems. The building owners can install the fire systems at their own expense or agree to participate in the city-sponsored program that will fund the installation. This ordinance will also require that all future new buildings or remodeling of existing buildings be protected with the automatic fire-suppression and detection systems. All buildings are required to have the fire-protection systems by June 30.
