Black and her husband watched as the Lakeside area progressed from a field with cows into the retail area that everyone now knows. She said it was a perfect area to open her dream business.
“I always talked about how this would be a great location. So [my husband] said, ‘Why don’t you go ask about it?’ And we did,” Black said.
Clink features eye-catching blue seating and a U-shaped bar. Behind the bar stands the 16 wines and four beers on tap.
As an establishment, Black aims to turn food and wine back into an event, not simply a task, she said.
“I really love that European cultures and a lot of other cultures get eating right. Where Americans see eating as a chore that we have to get done before the next thing, a lot of other cultures celebrate just sitting down having a nice meal and a glass of wine,” she said. “They really take time to savor that, so I wanted someplace like that.”
At Clink, even though it is a wine bar, Black explained that food is just as important as the wine. The food menu is specifically designed to go with the wines. Its menu offers a number of dishes that include bites such as marinated olives and cheese plates. The restaurant also offers meals such as a roasted mushroom tart, salmon and flatbreads.
“You can come to just have a drink with us before you go to dinner or after dinner,” Black said. “But you can also come for the entire experience from start to finish with us.”
One of Black’s goals as the owner of Clink is female empowerment. She said, as a female-owned business, it is important to her to take any opportunity she has to shine a light on other women.
Black aims to highlight women through the art on its walls, which has featured women since its conception, she said. The art is rotated regularly and is for sale to patrons.
“We have female artists that come and exhibit their work on our walls, usually anywhere from three to five months,” Black said.
