Lewisville city staff unveiled the city’s official mobile library app at a Oct. 7 workshop.

The app soft-launched Oct. 7 and is aimed at providing patrons to access the Lewisville Public Library catalog, their library account, and various library account functions, Library Director Carolyn Booker said. The app will accompany the city’s new online library card registration process that launched six weeks ago.

“[The app is] going to give you the full service that patrons are used to on the website, but in mobile format,” Booker said.

The details

City data indicated that over 56% of online library account users accessed services on a mobile device, Booker said.

With the new app, residents can log in using their library card number and PIN. They will then be able to search, place holds and manage their account. Patrons can also use the app’s digital library card to check out physical or digital books and materials, Booker said.

“Even if you don’t have a library card, the app can be useful to you,” she said. “You can see what we offer, see where the library is, get a map to the location, and see our hours and contact information.”

Looking ahead

The app is available on the Apple app store, but not the Google Play store for Android users. However, the city is working on optimizing the Android version for future launch, Booker said.

Staff are also working to refine the app’s map feature for Apple Maps users, which takes residents to the Municipal Annex building, she said.

By full launch, the app will support linked accounts allowing for multiple library cards, push notifications and social media links as well as provide the city with metrics and analytics on usage, Booker said. The app will also link with the city's events calendar and room reservation system.
