Coppell residents interested in running for City Council must file by Feb. 16.

The filing period for the five races on this year's ballot—mayor, Place 2, Place 4, Place 5 and Place 6—opened Jan. 17, according to the city's website. Representatives are elected at-large, meaning residents can vote for all positions regardless of where they live.

The overview

The mayor and council members are elected to three-year terms. Wes Mays is the incumbent mayor, Brianna Hinojosa-Smith is the incumbent for Place 2, Kevin Nevels is the incumbent for Place 4, John Jun is the incumbent for Place 5 and Mayor pro tem, and Biju Mathew is the incumbent for Place 6, according to the city's website.

Mays was elected to council in 2012 and mayor in 2021, Hinojosa-Smith was first elected to council in 2015 and Nevels won his seat in 2021, according to the city's website. Jun was elected to council in 2020 and Mathew was initially elected in 2018.


The deadline for a candidate to withdraw from a race is Feb. 23 and the final day to register to vote in the May election is April 4. Early voting runs April 22-30 and election day is May 4 with results compiled by both Dallas and Denton counties.

According to the city's website, eligible candidates for Coppell City Council must:
  • Be a qualified voter
  • Have lived in Coppell for at least the past year
  • Not be an employee of the city serving on council
  • Not owe back taxes or other liabilities to the city
