Lewisville City Council approved a resolution acknowledging 2023 cost of service rates for franchised solid waste and recycling services, and approved an ordinance amending fees related to those services during its Dec. 5 meeting. The cost increase affects all residential, multifamily and commercial customer rates.
The rates are adjusted annually by the percentage increase in the garbage and trash index for the Dallas-Fort Worth area for the preceding 12 months, according to the agenda item. The index for the Dallas-Fort Worth area reflects an increase of 5.8%, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data.
In 2020, council approved an exclusive franchise agreement for the collection of residential garbage, refuse, yard waste, bulky waste, recyclables, containerized waste and multifamily recycling with Allied Waste Systems Inc. doing business as Republic Services of Lewisville. The ordinance went into effect in January 2021.
Cost adjustments are not allowed to be higher than 5% in any contract year and no more than 15% in any consecutive four years, according to the agreement.
