The Coppell ISD administration made efforts to ensure the opportunity for a potential day off for staff in the 2024-25 and 2025-26 school years.

After the Coppell ISD board of trustees approved both calendars in January, the district began looking at the February schedule for the next two years and noticed a mistake, Assistant Superintendent Kristen Eichel said. Historically, district calendars allotted a potential long weekend for students and staff around President’s Day with a professional development day the Friday prior and a bad weather makeup day the following Monday on the holiday.

The details

The district replicated this schedule when crafting the new calendar options. However, officials accidentally swapped the dates in the adopted version, meaning staff members would have to work on President’s Day. The mistake wouldn’t affect students since they are off during professional development days, which allows them to have a four-day weekend regardless, provided the district isn’t required to attend school during the bad weather makeup day.

The board voted to revise the 2024-25 and 2025-26 calendars at a Feb. 26 meeting.

In addition to allowing teachers and staff possible time off on the holiday as done in previous years, the district requested the board reverse the mistake to align with calendars in neighboring districts such as Lewisville ISD and Grapevine-Colleyville ISD where many CISD employees live and their children attend school, Eichel said.

“It also allows for better timing of professional development,” she said. “Having it on a Friday, plans, preparation, setup can happen all week before going into that versus on a Monday where there’s the potential of employees having to come in over the weekend.”

Also of note

The CISD school year begins Aug. 14 and ends May 22, 2025. There are no early release days and no school on Election Day, Nov. 5 due to safety concerns as several CISD schools are mandated by Dallas County to serve as polling stations, Eichel said.

Fall break is set between Oct. 11-14 and spring break is scheduled for March 17-21 to align with Dallas College for dual-credit students at Coppell High School. The calendar builds in extra instructional time allowing flexibility to use additional minutes in lieu of bad weather days should the need arise. Students will be in school for 171 days.
